How do I know what my coin is worth?

Approximate values (very, very approximate) of type coins can be found in the Redbook, with more detailed pricing best derived by monitoring auction results and tracking actual sales of actual colonial coins. A caveat is required here, as an evaluation of auction prices is meaningful only to the extent that it is used to determine values of truly comparable items.

As noted above in our article about grading, there is tremendous variation in colonial coins, even for those described as being in the same numerical grade, and so cursorily checking grade and pricing information and then applying that data to other coins can be inaccurate, if not dangerous.

Carefully comparing coins that are graded similarly but which realize very different prices at auction is a useful exercise to understand the importance that collectors and dealers place on the other 'non-grade' attributes of a coin.

With that in mind, we would suggest that the online auction archives available for free on the Stack's and Heritage websites are a good place to start.
